Sadly, I think quantity over quality has taken a priority in a lot of aspects of journalism. In class, we’ve spent time talking about convergence journalism, and though it can be done well, there are times when multimedia is used just for the company to add a multimedia aspect. Companies are more concerned with the quantity of media and angles to the story, over the quality of the work.
But, big numbers are taking over in other aspects of journalism as well. In sports, as well as many political shows, networks are adding more and more hosts and analysts who don’t really bring anything to the program. On the e networks that carry NFL games, they all have at least five guys. And when they try to incite discussion and debate, they all are forced to have their own opinion, most of which are so crazy and inane, they can’t possibly be taken seriously. Convergence has proven it can be well done and beneficial, but I have yet to see any show where more than three analysts has been effective.
